What Renting A Dumpster Actually Involves
Renting a dumpster is simpler than most people expect and the surprises, when they happen, are almost always about weight rather than size. You tell us the project and the address, we tell you which container fits both, a truck drops it where you point, you load it over the next week or two, and we take it away and pay the tipping fee out of the price you were quoted. That is the whole transaction. We rent 3, 10, 20 and 40-yard containers to homeowners, contractors, property managers and businesses across Oakland and the wider East Bay, out of a yard on Linden Street in West Oakland. The part worth spending five minutes on before you book is the weight allowance: every container comes with a tonnage included in the flat rate, and dense material — plaster, tile, concrete, soil, roofing — reaches that allowance long before it fills the box. A remodel produces one kind of debris, a yard clearing another, and the right container for each is often not the same size. If you already know the job is heavy and small, start on the 10 yard dumpster. If it is bulky and light, the 20 yard dumpster is usually better value. And if the job is an active building site rather than a one-off clear-out, what you actually want is construction dumpsters on a swap schedule.

Why Rent From Us
There are two ways to price a dumpster rental. One is to quote a low headline number and recover it afterwards through fuel surcharges, environmental fees, overage rates nobody explained and a daily charge that started earlier than the customer thought. The other is to work out what the job actually weighs, quote the whole thing once and stand by it. We do the second one, which occasionally means our first number sounds higher than somebody else on the phone and almost always means it is the number on the invoice. We are a local operation running our own trucks out of West Oakland rather than a national broker passing your job to whoever answers, so the person quoting you knows what the street outside your house looks like, and the driver who turns up is one of ours.
- Flat-rate pricing that includes delivery, the rental period, the haul and the disposal.
- The weight allowance is stated in writing before you book, and so is the per-ton rate if you go over it.
- Local trucks from a West Oakland yard, not a national call center subcontracting the drop.
- Plywood under the rollers on every driveway placement, as standard rather than on request.
- Seven-day standard rental with a flat daily extension, so a slow job is not a penalty.
- Straight answers about what will not be taken — before the truck arrives, not at the scale.
Reasons To Rent A Dumpster
A container earns its money whenever the amount of waste beats what the curbside bins and a few trips to the transfer station can absorb:
You are remodeling a kitchen or bathroom
Cabinetry, counters, tile, a tub, subfloor and the drywall behind all of it. A single bathroom fills more container than people expect, and tile and plaster are heavy enough that the tonnage matters as much as the volume.
A garage, basement or attic has to be emptied
Decades of accumulation, mostly bulky and mostly light. This is the job a container is best at, because you load it a bit at a time over a week instead of committing a weekend to trips.
You are tearing off a roof
Composition shingle is one of the heaviest things anybody loads, and a roof produces its debris in a single day. It needs a low container and a realistic tonnage, not the biggest box available.
A yard or garden is being cleared
Old fencing, decking, sheds, green waste, broken concrete patio. Mixed loads cost more to dispose of than sorted ones, and we will tell you where separating actually saves money.
You are moving out or clearing an estate
Whatever is not being kept, sold or donated has to go somewhere, usually on a deadline. A container in the driveway for two weeks takes the time pressure off a job that is already difficult.
A rental unit is turning over
Tenant leavings, worn carpet, damaged furniture and the accumulated contents of a garage that was not in the lease. Landlords and property managers are our most repeat customers for exactly this.

How A Rental Works, Start To Finish
One call to book, one drop, one collection, and no invoice you have not already seen.
1. Tell us the job and the address
What is going in, roughly how much, and where the container can sit. That is enough for us to name a size, a weight allowance and a flat price. If the address is somewhere we know is tight — the Oakland hills, an Alameda side yard, a Berkeley street north of campus — we will say so before you book rather than after.
2. Delivery day
We need roughly 60 feet of straight clear approach and around 23 feet of overhead clearance for the truck to set a container down, and clear space where it is going. Plywood goes under the rollers on any driveway. You do not need to be there, provided we know where it goes and the space is clear.
3. Load it over the week
Standard rental is seven days and most people use three to five. Heavy material goes in flat on the bottom, bulky items on top, and nothing above the top rail — an overfilled container legally cannot be transported and will have to be leveled before it moves.
4. Call for collection
Call or text when it is ready, or leave it to the end of the rental period and we collect automatically. The load is weighed at a licensed facility, recyclable material is separated where the load allows, and you get the ticket. If the weight came in under the allowance, nothing more is owed and nothing more is invoiced.
Sizes, Weights, Prices And The Fine Print
The things worth understanding before you pick a container:
Choosing between the sizes
A 3-yard takes about one pickup load and suits a small clear-out or a tight alley. A 10-yard takes three or four and is the right box for anything heavy. A 20-yard is the general-purpose remodel container and the most commonly booked size in Oakland. A 40-yard is for whole-house clear-outs, demolition and light bulky material in volume. When two sizes both look plausible, take the larger one: a second haul costs far more than the difference between sizes.
What the weight allowance means
Every flat rate includes a tonnage — roughly 1 ton on a 3-yard, 2 on a 10-yard, 3 on a 20-yard and 5 to 6 on a 40-yard. Go over and there is a per-ton overage, which we quote up front. Mixed household debris rarely troubles the allowance. Plaster, tile, roofing, soil and concrete very much do, which is the whole reason the heavy-debris container exists.
Rental period and extensions
Seven days is standard, fourteen is common on estate and yard jobs, and extending is a flat daily rate agreed at the time rather than a penalty applied afterwards. If you finish early, call and we will collect early — nothing is refunded for unused days, but an empty driveway is worth having back.
Where the container can legally sit
On your own driveway or private property, no permit is needed. In the street, on a sidewalk or anywhere in the public right of way, a permit is required and it is the city’s to grant, not ours. Oakland handles that through the transportation department; the other cities on our map each run their own process. We file it for you.
Protecting the surface underneath
We put plywood under the rollers and the rear of the container on every driveway drop. Poured concrete in decent condition handles a loaded box without complaint. Pavers, brick, stamped concrete and old asphalt can mark or crack, and on those we will walk the drive with you first and tell you honestly what the risk looks like.
What cannot go in
Paint, solvents, fuel, oil, batteries, tires, asbestos, fluorescent tubes, pesticides, medical waste and pressurized cylinders. Fridges and air conditioners need the refrigerant removed by a certified technician first. Alameda County runs free household hazardous waste drop-off for residents, and that is where these belong.
Recycling and diversion paperwork
Every load is weighed and ticketed at a licensed facility, and recoverable material is separated where the load allows. If the job is under a building permit, the state’s CALGreen rules and the local ordinances expect documented diversion, and the weight tickets are what proves it.
Booking lead time
Next-day is normal across the East Bay and same-day is often possible if you call before mid-morning. The exceptions are predictable: Monday mornings, the first dry week after a long spell of rain, and the end of August when every apartment in Berkeley turns over at once.
What A Dumpster Rental Costs In Oakland
Flat rates in the East Bay run roughly $250 to $350 for a 3-yard, $375 to $500 for a 10-yard, $475 to $650 for a 20-yard and $650 to $800 or so for a 40-yard, each including delivery, seven days, collection and disposal up to the stated tonnage. What moves the number:
- Container size. This is the largest single factor and the easiest to get wrong in the expensive direction by booking too small.
- The weight allowance you need. Heavy debris means either a smaller box with a higher included tonnage or a per-ton overage on a larger one.
- What is in the load. Clean single-material loads — concrete only, green waste only, wood only — are cheaper to dispose of than mixed debris, sometimes substantially.
- How long you keep it. Seven days is in the price; beyond that it is a flat daily rate rather than a percentage.
- Where it has to sit. Driveway placement costs nothing extra. A street placement adds the city permit fee and the posting, which we pass through at cost.
- Access difficulty. Ordinary streets are ordinary. A hillside address with a blind turn and cars on both sides sometimes needs a smaller truck, and we say so when quoting rather than on the day.
- Distance. It is a flat rate across our whole service area, so a Hayward address and a Berkeley address pay the same for the same box.
Everything is quoted once, in writing, with the tonnage and the overage rate stated so there is nothing to discover later. If a container is the wrong tool for the job we will say that too. You can compare every size and price on the Oakland dumpster rental home page, and the individual size pages go into what each one actually holds.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I book a dumpster?
A day or two is plenty for most East Bay addresses, and same-day drops are often possible if you call before mid-morning. Book further ahead for the predictable rushes: Monday mornings, the first dry week after sustained rain when every roofer in the East Bay starts at once, and late August when the Berkeley apartment blocks all turn over in the same two weeks.
Do I have to be home when it is delivered or collected?
No, as long as we know exactly where the container goes and the space is clear of cars, bins and low branches. Most of our deliveries happen with nobody there. Send a photo of the spot when you book if there is any ambiguity — it takes thirty seconds and it prevents the one situation where a driver has to leave without dropping.
Can I put the container in the street?
Yes, with a permit from the city. Oakland issues them through its transportation department and the other cities we serve each run their own process, usually with a no-parking posting a set number of hours in advance. We file the application and handle the posting; the fee is passed through at cost. On private driveways and private property no permit is required at all.
What happens if I go over the weight allowance?
You pay a per-ton overage on the excess, at a rate we quote before you book rather than after the load is weighed. It is not a penalty, it is the disposal cost the facility charges us. Where it catches people out is dense material: plaster, tile, roofing, soil and concrete reach the tonnage long before they fill the box, which is why we ask what is going in rather than only how much.
Can I keep it longer than a week?
Yes. Seven days is the standard rental and extending is a flat daily rate agreed when you ask, not a surcharge applied afterwards. Estate clear-outs and yard projects routinely run to two weeks and that is entirely normal. Tell us when you book if you already know it will be a long one, and we will build it into the quote.
Will the truck damage my driveway?
We put plywood under the rollers and the rear of the container as standard, which spreads the load and is what prevents the marks people worry about. Sound poured concrete takes it without trouble. Pavers, brick, stamped concrete and ageing asphalt carry genuine risk of marking or cracking, and on those surfaces we will walk the drive with you first and give you an honest read rather than a reassurance.
What can I not put in a dumpster?
Anything hazardous: paint, solvents, fuel, motor oil, batteries, pesticides, asbestos, fluorescent tubes, medical waste and pressurized cylinders. Tires are excluded almost everywhere. Fridges, freezers and air conditioners need the refrigerant recovered by a certified technician before they can be loaded. Alameda County residents have free household hazardous waste drop-off available, which is the right route for all of it.
Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or hire a junk removal crew?
A container is cheaper per cubic yard by a wide margin, because you are paying for the box and the disposal rather than for labor. A crew is worth it when there is very little to remove, when it has to be gone the same afternoon, or when nobody on site can safely lift it. For anything that takes more than a few hours to load, the container wins on price and it wins by more the bigger the job gets.
